French Read Aloud for learning French Colours

Read Aloud with Madame Angel: Rouge, rouge, qu’est-ce qui est rouge?

Rouge, rouge rouge, qu’est-ce qui est rouge?

Using books to teach concepts, vocabulary and French grammar is such an important tool for early French Immersion readers. Colours is a great first theme to start a new year as there are so many activities and games you can do using colours.  For this instalment of  Read Aloud with Madame Angel I am featuring one of my own books and one that has been a favourite in my classroom

French Read Aloud book to teach Colours

Rouge, rouge, qu’est-ce qui est rouge? is one of 11 books in my series featuring all of the colours!  There is one for every colour and it does not take long for students to get used to the pattern and the funny endings! This book is great for choral reading, an important skills for early learners. Choral reading helps develop oral fluency, comfort in speaking the language and the repetitiveness of the texts helps students internalise some of the structures within the book.

The book is framed in the form of questions such as  “Est-ce que la pomme est rouge?” I teach students how to use “est-ce que” to form their questions very early on the school year.  As well as helping students learn to form questions, the books in this series feature common vocabulary that students will find useful in their everyday school life!

The package featuring a big book version, allowing students to read right along with you.  Once students have mastered the text, try having them read along in different voices with you!  A low voice, a scary voice, a mad voice. . . The possibilities are endless! Children love answering each question!

As well as the “Big Book” format, you will find each package in the series comes with two half-sized versions in black and white.  One version can be used as a colouring book with the pages already illustrated.  The second version has blank space so that students can colour the images according to the text.   These versions are great to use in student’s book bins or to send home at the end of the week for them to share with students.

Another aspect of learning with any of my Emergent Readers is the Class book.

Class books allows each student the opportunity to contribute a page to a book. The class book is then placed in the reading corner and students love to look back on it during reading times!  Make several throughout the year and you can send them home as a keepsake at the end of the year!

La Rentrée Resources for La classe de Madame Angel

The activity is engaging for every student because they can easily contribute from a variety of starting points.  Included in the package are prompts and guidelines to help your students be successful at writing a simple sentence for the colour. The vocabulary and sentence structure is repeated to help students experience success!
