Read Aloud with Madame Angel: S’il vous plaît, M. Panda

Teaching polite words is so important in our early French classroom!  Giving students the vocabulary they need to be polite with each other goes a long way to helping build a caring community.  If you are not familiar with Steve Antony’s panda series, I am glad I get to share him with you!

S’il vous plaît, M.Panda by Steve Antony features the cutest little panda bear.  He has a dozen donuts that he wants to give away but his friends keep forgetting to say please.  That is until he meets up with the lemur!  With really engaging pictures and a simple text, your early French Immersion students will get a lot of enjoyment out of this book!

The text is great to use as a starting point for talking about polite words and brainstorming a list of words that your students may need to know how to say in French.  It is always a good idea to hear their voice and to see what words they think are important.

From there, you could have students practice asking for things and giving things. You can have your students make up little skits to practice asking for objects around the classroom.  A simple skit might simply look like the one below:

Student A: Est-ce que je peux avoir un crayon, s’il vous plaît?

Student B: Oui tu peux avoir un crayon.

Student A: Merci!

Student B: De rien!

Another tool for learning polite words is my “Clés de politesse” resource!  These keys to politeness feature a variety of words on a set of keys. Use a binder ring to make a ring and you can use them to practice the vocabulary.  They also could be used to make a fun bulletin board!
